Every custom starts with a conversation about where you surf, how you surf and what you weigh. Tai shapes the blank by hand (Burford Blanks, Tauranga) and laminates with Entropy Super Sap bio-resin and 6 oz S-cloth. CNC pre-shape available for repeat orders. Turnaround is four to six weeks; rush jobs cost 20% more.

Fin systems: FCS II or Futures, glassed-on single fins for logs. All boards come with a six-month delamination warranty and one free fin-box re-set.

1. Design consult

   We talk waves, weight, fitness and what boards you have ridden before. Tai sketches the outline and rocker curve on paper. Takes about 30 minutes in the bay or over a video call.

2. Blank selection

   Tai picks a Burford blank close to the target density and thickness. EPS available for epoxy builds. The blank arrives from Tauranga in three to five days.

3. Hand shape

   Template, cut, plane, sand. The rails are shaped by feel using a Skil 100 and then hand-finished with 80-grit to 320-grit screens. About four hours per board.

4. Lamination

   Entropy Super Sap bio-resin over 6 oz S-cloth (deck gets a double 6 for strength). Fin boxes set and hotcoated. Cured in the Raglan sun.

5. Sanding & finish

   Wet-sanded from 220 to 600 grit, gloss coat optional. Spray, tint or resin swirl colours mixed in-house. Custom artwork hand-painted before the gloss.

6. Pickup or ship

   Collect from the bay, or we ship nationwide in a double-boxed carton ($65 North Island, $95 South Island). Every board leaves with a care guide and a sticker.

Tai Ngata has shaped boards since 2008. He started laminating at Firewire's factory in Carlsbad, California, came home in 2012 and opened the bay behind his flat on Bow Street. He shapes around 120 boards a year — about half customs, half from his five stock models — and surfs Manu Bay most mornings before the bay opens at nine.

Tai's boards have been ridden in the Piha Pro, the Fitzroy Classic and by a handful of surfers who will never enter a contest but paddle out every day regardless. He is a member of the NZ Surfboard Shapers Guild and teaches a shaping workshop at Raglan Area School each summer term.
