Timber Retaining Walls

Our timber walls use H5-treated radiata pine poles (125 mm or 150 mm diameter) at 1.2 m centres, with H4 rails and a geotextile-lined drainage blanket behind the face.

Timber is the best value for straight runs under 1.5 m on flat-to-moderate slopes. For curves, steps or heights above 1.5 m, we recommend concrete block or gabion.

Concrete Block Systems

Our concrete block walls use Firth Keystone or similar interlocking masonry with 12 mm deformed steel reinforcement at every second core, filled with grout and vibrated.

Block is our most popular choice for subdivisions and building platforms. We handle the engineering, council consent and producer statement process end to end.

Gabion & Rock Walls

Gabion baskets are welded wire cages filled on site with locally sourced basalt or river-washed greywacke. They drain freely, flex with ground movement and look better with age.

Our Projects

The Build Process

1. Free site assessment

   We visit your property, measure the slope, check access and soil type, and discuss what you need. Takes about 30 minutes.

2. Engineering design

   Our engineer produces a PS1 design with cross-sections, drainage layout and a specification. Included in the quote for walls over 1.5 m.

3. Council consent

   We lodge the building consent application and handle any requests for information. Typical turnaround is 15–20 working days.

4. Site preparation

   Excavation, temporary bunding if needed, and installation of sediment controls. We arrange digger access and traffic management.

5. Wall construction

   Foundation, wall build, backfill and drainage installation. We photograph every stage for the code compliance certificate.

6. Handover and guarantee

   Final inspection with the council inspector, issue of code compliance, and your 10-year structural guarantee document.
