02 · Rod repairs

Broken tip? We fix that.

Doug Trevella has been building and repairing rods for thirty years. The bench is in the back of the shop — bring the rod in and Doug will quote on the spot. Most repairs turn around in three to five business days.

• Tip replacement

  Same-day if the tip size is in stock. Over 200 sizes on the wall.

• Full re-wrap

  From $120

  All guides stripped and re-wrapped. Choice of thread colours. Epoxy finish.

• Guide replacement

  $25 each

  SiC, alconite and titanium guides in stock. Fuji and Pacific Bay.

• Cork & grip repair

  From $45

  Cork fill, re-sand, seal. Or a full regrip with AAA Portuguese cork.

Tie your own.

• Beginner Fly-Tying

  Saturday 10am–1pm $65pp, materials included Max 8 seats 3 spots left

  Learn the woolly bugger, hare & copper nymph and a basic dry. Vice, tools and materials provided. You keep what you tie.

• Nymph Patterns Masterclass

  Sunday 9am–12pm $85pp, bring own vice Max 6 seats 5 spots left

  Pheasant tail, perdigon, Frenchie and a bead-head caddis. Hemi walks through proportions, bead sizing and Euro nymphing leader setups.

• Kids’ First Fishing Rig

  School holidays, 10am–12pm $30pp, rod+reel combo to keep Ages 6–12 Bookings open

  Kids build a simple spin rig, learn to tie a uni knot and cast in the car park. They take the rod home.

• Lake Rotorua

  Rainbow trout to 3.5lb at the stream mouths. Early morning best.

  Try: Mrs Simpson, size 10

• Lake Rotoiti

  Good browns in the 4–6lb range jigging at Otaramarae. Drop-offs in 15m.

  Try: Tassie Devil, gold

• Lake Tarawera

  Consistent rainbows harling the eastern arm. Smelt balls visible on the sounder.

  Try: Cobra, green/gold

• Lake Ōkātaina

  Fly-fishing from the shore producing 2–3lb rainbows on dries in the evenings.

  Try: Royal Wulff, size 12

• Lake Rotomā

  Quiet this week. Try trolling deeper with lead-core line in the main basin.

  Competition fly-fisher and Central Plateau lifer. Opened the shop in 2014 after twenty years guiding. Ask Hemi about Lake Rotoiti — he knows every drop-off.

  Thirty years on the bench. Builds custom rods and handles every repair. Prefers split-cane but respects graphite.

  Weekends & lake guide

  Part-time in the shop, full-time on the water. Runs guided trips on Tarawera and Ōkātaina in summer.
