Code South Academy runs evening and weekend classes from our space on George Street. Small groups, live instructors, real projects. No self-paced videos, no pre-recorded lectures — just sixteen seats, a whiteboard and a person who can answer your questions.

Meet the instructors

Kiri Anaru

HTML, CSS, JavaScript

BSc Computer Science (Otago). Former front-end developer at Vend. Kiri started Code South in 2023 after running a free lunchtime class at the Dunedin Public Library.

Marcus Chen

Python, Data, SQL

MSc Data Science (Canterbury). Works part-time as a data analyst at the Otago Regional Council. Teaches Python the way he learned it — with messy real-world data.

Jordan McLeod

React, Full-Stack, DevOps

Six years as a senior developer at Xero in Wellington, moved south for the mountains. Teaches advanced classes and mentors job-ready students through portfolio reviews.

Te Paea Raukawa

Code Club host, Community

Self-taught developer, Otago Polytech graduate. Runs the Friday Code Club and co-ordinates with local employers on internship placements for advanced students.

FAQ

Before you enrol.

How big are the classes?

Sixteen seats maximum. We keep them small so the instructor can reach every desk. Most classes fill within two weeks of enrolment opening.

Do I need my own laptop?

Bring one if you can. If not, we have eight loan laptops (Chromebooks) available for $30 per term. All software we use is free and browser-based.

What level should I start at?

If you have never written a line of code, start with HTML & CSS Fundamentals (Monday) or JavaScript Essentials (Wednesday). If you can build a basic webpage, Python for Data (Tuesday) or React (Thursday) is the next step.

When is Term 4?

12 October to 14 December 2026. No classes during exam week (23–27 November). Final project presentations on 12 December. Enrolment opens 15 September.

Is there parking?

We are at 142 George Street, upstairs above the Vogel Street entrance. Free evening parking on George Street after 6pm. The Octagon car park is a three-minute walk.

Can I attend more than one class?

Yes. The three-class bundle ($450) is your best value. Many students do a beginner class plus Code Club, or an intermediate class plus Saturday Project Day.

Is Code Club really free?

Yes. Friday Code Club is a free, drop-in community session. No enrolment needed. Bring a laptop or use one of ours. All levels welcome.
